Boon San Tong Khoo Kongsi is one of the sectional groups from Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi. The branch, formed by five smaller branches, built a double-storey ancestral hall at Victoria Street in 1878.
The ancestrall hall of Boon San Tong which combines the basic configuration of a Hokkien temple and the bungalows in early Penang, has a main hall with prayer pavilion and a symmetrical plan of five bays. The three-bayed prayer pavilion is erected on a half-storey stone plinth and fronts the main hall. It is surrounded with wrought iron handrails but made accessible from the front and the sides. From the pavilion up to the main hall is another half-storey upward tread, linked by a grand granite stone staircase.
The prayer pavilion has a traditional Chinese hip-and-gable roof. It is finished with curved and semi-cylindrical terra-cotta tiles. The main hall has a tripartite gable roof, where the central bays have a higher roof than the side roofs, finished with curved tiles. Its roof surfaces are symmetrically curved to the sides. The central ridges of the prayer pavilion and main hall are constructed in the fashion of ‘swallow tail’ curved ridges, which themselves are decorated with exuberant porcelain shard works consisted of auspicious creatures, plants and animals.
Boon San Tong was left in dilapidation for a long time and was finally brought to life again in 2014, when Wensi Heritage had the opportunity to be involved in the restoration of the temple. The restoration was later completed in 2016.
