Carpenter Street, Kuching

Hiang Thian Siang Ti Temple

Hiang Thian Siang Ti Temple at Carpenter Street, Kuching was reconstructed in the year of 1889. It is not just the cultural center of the Kuching Chinese but also the cradle of Kuching Teochew Association. The temple belongs to Teochew architecture. Its facade is set away from the street edge, hence creating a front yard between the street and the temple, which is guarded by two stone lion statues. The temple has an elongated spatial structure with three bays and two sections configured on the basis of a classical Teochew temple. The prayer pavilion in the middle is served by two courtyards at both sides and it is wedged between the front hall and the main hall. The three spaces interconnect to form an I-shaped ensemble. The roofs of these spaces are joined as well, tiled with alternate curved and semi-cylindrical tiles.  The roof eave of the front hall is supported by eave beams shaped as heads of dragons, which is a hint of its Teochew stylistic influence. The central roof ridge is curved at the ends and finished with rinceaux moulding, , where two sculptural dragons could be seen crouching above it.

The stage is at the opposite side of the street, inconspicuously sandwiched between other adjoining shophouses. The stage is constructed with masonry and timber structure with a traditional Chinese hip-and-gable roof. Both the temple and the stage were restored in 2009 by Wensi Heritage particularly in the areas of roof works, timber structures, porcelain shard sculptures and colour paintings.
