The building of Poh Oo Toong in Pulau Tikus, Penang initially belonged to the wealthy merchant Yeoh Cheang Seng. His wife, Yeoh Soh Oo was a devout Buddhist, allocated a parcel of their home land to build the Poh Oo Tong Buddhist Temple in 1938. Poh Oo Toong was consecrated to Sakyamuni Buddha. It is a Buddhist temple with Hokkien architectural style. The temple has a three-bay division and consisted of two halls, two wings and a front prayer pavilion. The outermost facade is designed to be a five-bay-archway. The spaces are sequenced in typical Chinese temple hierarchy. From the front, one enters into the front yard, followed by the archway facade, pavilion with side yards, main hall, walkways, side wings, rear courtyards and finally the ancestral hall.
The roof plane of Poh Oo Toong is curved from the center to its sides. The roof ridges were all constructed in the fashion of the Hokkien’s ‘swallow tail’ curves. The archway facade is topped with three parts of differential roofs abiding to the spatial hierarchies between the bays. The entire roof ensemble of Poh Oo Toong has thirty three ridges which is highly elaborate. The ridges are decorated with dragons, ao yu and pai tou. In 2016, Wensi Heritage was appointed to conduct repair works on Poh Oo Tong, which included roof tiling works, porcelain shards art pieces repair and paint works.
